Gospel music fans enjoyed a toe-tapping, hand-clapping, good time during the Gaither Vocal Band's performance Friday night at the Pensacola Civic Center.

Vehicles, including several church vans and buses, packed the Civic Center parking lots, as a predominantly older audience, sprinkled with families and young children, filled most of the seats available for the show.

The evening opened with the Gaither Vocal Band, fronted by Bill Gaither, and opening act Ernie Haase and Signature Sound, singing together as they trooped through the floor-level audience on their way to the stage.

Gaither, who has enjoyed a long career that includes five Grammy awards and more than 40 albums, greeted cheering fans with the joking remark, "This is the men's night. It's just a bunch of ugly old guys up here singing for you tonight."

The good-natured humor continued with opening quartet Ernie Haase and Signature Sound. The four young men kept audiences laughing at their on-stage banter and singing along with their upbeat, pitch-perfect harmonies that included "Pray for Me" and "Dry Bones."

Born-again Christian comic Jeff Allen followed with a short set of popular, family-friendly material, earning the praise of Gaither, who said that Allen was proof that comedy didn't have to be "wild" to be successful.

Gaither spent some time chatting amiably to audience, prompting several hearty "Amen's" that could be heard throughout the Civic Center, before being joined by his Vocal Band.

The quartet performed a number of gospel favorites and had fans on their feet, clapping for more.
